Song of the Brokenhearted ~ Review

Song of the Brokenhearted
by Shelia Walsh & Candy Martinusen Coloma

This book is about a lady named Ava and how far she has come from her "troubled" childhood.  Ava is now in her late forties and has started a ministry in her church.  She has the "perfect" marriage, two great kids, and a beautiful house.  Until one day...it all fell apart.  Ava has to learn to fully rely on God through the good times and now through the bad times.

This book was a great read.  I found myself not wanting to put it down, but with a toddler in the house, it was not possible to keep reading.  I had to read it when she was in bed.  This book was beautifully written and has an easy to follow story line.  There are also many great lessons to learn from this book.  Do we always rely on God?  Even during our bad times?  I learned that God will always be with us- at ALL times.

I received this book from Book Sneeze for an honest review.

Our School Room

We live in a house that has a front "formal" living room that we have converted into our schoolroom.  There are doors on either end of this room that closes it off to the rest of the house.

We have a table and chairs set up for the kids to do their work.  They each have a notebook, pencil, crayons, and a pen for the older two.  I set up a box in the middle for them to put their completed work.

The kids did some nice art pieces at VBS this year.  We wanted to display them in the school room.  This one was done by my 6 year old daughter.

Just a little glimpse of our school room.  It's not much, but we like it.

Flan recipe

One of our favorite things to eat for dessert is flan. My son loves it so much that he asked for a flan for his birthday instead of a cake.

The recipe I use is from Daisy Martinez.

Flan

Caramel Topping:
2 Tbsp water
1 c sugar
Put in heavy saucepan or skillet and cook over medium heat without stirring, until golden and the bubbles die down. Be sure to wipe down the sides of the pan with a pastry brush dipped in water to prevent crystals from forming. When golden, pour into a pie plate and rotate the plate to coat the bottom and sides of the pan with the caramel. Be sure to work quickly as the mixture will cool and get firm as you spread. .

Crema Fresca:
1 can evaporated milk
1 can sweetened and condensed milk
3 eggs
3 egg yolks
1 tsp vanilla
1 can Nestle media crema (table cream) (I can find this at Walmart)

Boiling water for hot water bath

Put everything, except boiling water, into a blender and blend well. When blended, pour over the caramel in the pie pan.

Place the pie pan into a roasting pan with sides that is large enough to hold the pie pan comfortably. Pour boiling water into the roasting pan so that the water comes to half way up the sides of the pie pan. Place immediately into a 350F oven and bake for about 35 minutes or until the flan barely jiggles when shook. .

When cool you can serve or place in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

To serve, lightly run a knife around the sides of the flan to make sure it does not stick and invert onto a deep platter, shaking lightly if needed to dislodge the flan. If you shake too hard it will break.

Garnish with whipped cream.

Our curriculum

Our curriculum this year is pretty basic.  I have a 5th, a 4th, and a 2nd grader this year.

For all the basics (penmanship, language, math, spelling, science, history, health), we will be using A Beka.

95702       98752      135097

We will do penamanship, language, and math everyday.  Spelling, history, and science Monday through Thursday.  Science is 1st semester and health is 2nd semester.

For Bible, we will use Proverbs people from TheLearning Parent.

I found some free online typing  and Spanish lessons for the kids to do this year.

And finally, for art, we are using Lambs Book of Art by Barry Stebbing.

First week

We had our first week of school for the 2012-2013 school year.  I made some changes to our schedule this year and we have been getting done before lunch time every day.  I hope it continues to go smoothly.

The Creation Answer Book ~ Review

The Creation Answer Book, Hank Hanegraaff

The Creation Answer Book is written by Hank Hanegraff and published by Thomas Nelson.  This book has some beautiful pictures on the outside cover. The author has done a great deal of research on the topic of creation.  The book covers topics such as creation, the flood, and dinosaurs.  While the author does believe in God, he does not support a "young earth" view.  He also states that even though the earth could be billions of years old, it is not an evolutionary or Big Bang process.  There are advanced reading chapters after each regular chapter that goes into more depth.  I did not particularly enjoy reading this book, because I do not agree with everything Mr. Hanegraff has written in the book.

I received this book free of charge from Thomas Nelson Publishing through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
