What's In The Bible? Volume 10 ~ Review and Giveaway

I had heard of the Buck Denver Asks...What's in the Bible? DVD series, but have never had an opportunity to watch one. I recently was given the chance to review Volume 10 in the series. Volumes 1 - 9 cover the Old Testament. Volume 10 starts with the New Testament.

What's in the Bible? Volume 10: Jesus is the Good News covers the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). Volume 10 includes two 25 minute episodes: God's Perfect Timing and The Messiah Has Come. In God's Perfect Timing, Buck Denver and children learn about the 400 years between the Old and New Testaments and how Jesus arrives at just the right time. In The Messiah Has Come, we learn about the life and ministry of Jesus, how he died, and rose again.

I sat down with my 3 year old daughter to watch this video. When it first started, she asked, "Is this about Jesus?" She loves Jesus and loves going to church, so I knew she would loving watching the DVD. She sat through the entire video without moving or talking after that. I asked her at the end if she enjoyed it and she said, "YES!" I enjoyed watching this video with her. I liked that this is a Christian video and I don't have to preview it to make sure it is okay for my 3 year old to watch.

Being Thankful

For the past two years I have written almost each day leading up to Thanksgiving Day on what I have been thankful for that year. You can read them here. Well, I really was not thinking about it this year and just forgot all about it. So, I am just going to write one post on what I am thankful for this year.

I asked my three year old what she is thankful for and she said, "dogs, cats, and little birds."

I am thankful for my children, my husband, our health, having a roof over our heads, and having food on the table.

I am also thankful for God's creation. I have seen some beautiful sunsets this year. I love when the leaves change color.

I am thankful to have a running washer and dryer and a car that while not reliable still gets us to where we need to go.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving! Remember to thank God for all He has provided for you.

Finding Hope Now DVD ~ Review and Giveaway

*This post may contain affiliate links.*

Finding Hope Now is a movie based on a true story. Reverend Roger Minassian had a heart for the gang youth in Fresno, California. In 1993, Rev. Minassian left his church and started the ministry Hope Now for Youth. While dealing with gangs, Roger meets Santos Delgado. Santos is a 16 year old who has left his home and now survives on the street. Santos joins one of the gangs and his life starts spiraling out of control. Roger keeps on Santos and eventually Santos life starts turning around the right way. Rev. Minassian learns to become a father to the fatherless.

Since it's beginning, Hope Now for Youth has placed over 1800 gang members with criminal records in jobs with Fresno businesses. Hope Now has given them a chance at a new life and have taught men how to be loving husbands and fathers.

Finding Hope Now is available at Family Christian for $19.99. It is recommended for ages 12 and up because of gang related violence.

This is not a movie I would normally choose to watch, but I am glad I was chosen to review this movie. It was such an inspiring movie and had me in tears by the end. Reverend Minassian has such a big heart and loves youth and wants them to do right. It inspired me to want to help the youth in my city. I live near a city that has a gang problem and my mayor has a heart like Roger and wants to get them off the street and into jobs. This movie will not disappoint.

Now for the giveaway: Family Christian has let me give one of my readers a chance at winning the DVD. USA and Canada only. Please enter using the rafflecopter below.

Also, I would love for you to check out Our Life ~ Home and School on Facebook to keep up with my reviews and giveaways.

Snake Oil: Party Potion ~ Review

Snake Oil Review

We love playing board games and card games in our house. So, when I find a new to us game or am introduced to a new game, I want to learn more about the game. We recently reviewed Snake Oil - Party Potion from  Out of the Box.

Out of the Box offers many fun and educational games. Snake Oil – Party Potion is a fun, fast paced game. You are able to play the game in about 30 minutes. This game is geared for ages 8+, but can be used with children as young as 6 if they are reading. It is for 3-6 players and only takes 5 minutes to learn how to play. Snake Oil – Party Potion is available for $14.99.

The name Snake Oil was first introduced in America in the 1860’s. Chinese laborers would rub the oil, that was made from water snake oil, on them after a hard day’s work. Products that contain water snake oil are still used today. In 1917, a sample was tested and found to contain no actual snake oil. As a result of the false product claims and misleading labels, the name “Snake Oil Salesman” was born.

How to play Snake Oil – Party Potion:

The game comes with 14 customer cards and 112 word cards.

Step One: Each player draws 6 word cards and one player chooses to be the customer.

step one

Step Two: The remaining players take about 30 seconds to combine two of their word cards to create something for the customer. Each player then has to persuade the customer that his product is the best. The customer can cut off the pitch after 30 seconds.

Step twostep two 2

Step Three: After each player has made their pitch, the customer chooses the best item and that player wins the customer card. The word cards used that round are discarded and each player draws enough cards to bring their total back up to six. The player to the left of the customer becomes the customer.

step three

Winning: The player with the most customer cards, after each player has been customer one time, wins.

You can check out a video on the directions here.

How we used the game and What we thought:

My kids and I played this game several times throughout the review period. We usually played during the afternoons after we finished our school work for the day. Since there were only 4 of us, the game play went fairly fast. We never played for more than 30 minutes which was great when you don’t have a lot of time to sit down and play a game. My kids, ages 12, 11, and 9, loved this game. They loved trying to convince the customer to pick their product. They didn't like that the game play went fast though. They wanted to keep playing one more time. I enjoyed playing this game with my kids. It was great to see them laugh and have a good time with each other. This is a game we will keep around and play during the cold winter months.

My Favorite Bible Verses ~ B

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. ~ Acts 16:31

Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. ~ Ephesians 4:32

And the beatitudes fit in perfectly this week:

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. ~ Matthew 5:3-11

Purposeful Design ~ Book Review

Jay Schabacker of Purposeful Design recently sent us his book Purposeful Design: Understanding the Creation to review. I am always on the lookout for great books that can help us in our homeschool. This books goes along with what we are studying in science and what we studied earlier in the year for history.

Each chapter of the book is devoted to each day of creation.

Introduction – The “Man in the Moon” ~ Tells about the moon’s orbit

Chapter 1 ~ The First Day: Creation of the Heavens and the Earth- the Foundation of it All ~ Talks about the earth rotation and orbit

Chapter 2 ~ The Second Day: Creation of the Atmosphere and Water ~ We learn about the rain cycle

Chapter 3 ~ The Third Day: Creation of the Dry Land and Vegetation ~ Tells us how beneficial fruits and vegetable are to us

Chapter 4 ~ The Fourth Day: Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Stars ~ We learn about seasons and tides

This book is beautifully illustrated with great photographs as well as many scripture verses throughout. Purposeful Design is appropriate for children of all ages and is available for $18.95. You can download three chapters of this book for free.

There is also a free bonus Young Explorers Club curriculum that goes along perfectly with the book.  It is a pdf of pages of questions about each day of creation.

Page 1 from the Student Workbook

I read this book to my children when we received it. They loved listening to what Mr. Schabacker wrote about the wonderful world we live in and how God thoughtfully created everything in it. As I stated above, this book goes along wonderfully with what my 4th and 6th graders are using for science this year. It also was a great read for review for the history curriculum we are using this year. All of my children, ages 12, 11, 9, and 3, enjoyed listening to each chapter and looking at the pictures while I read through each page. We read through the questions from the PDF download and my children answered the questions orally.

My science boy, age 12, loved this book. He loved all of the pictures and he mentioned that his favorite part was reading why God chose the earth to tilt at exactly 23 1/2 degrees. He said he had never really thought about what would happen if it was tilted at 0 degrees or 50 degrees.

My 11 year old said his favorite part of the book was the photos. My 9 year old and 3 year old also loved looking at all of the pictures.

I liked this book and also loved looking at all the beautiful pictures throughout the book. It is a well put together book that my family can use for many years.

If He Had Not Come ~ Book Review

My children love books. So whenever I have the chance to review new to us books, I am excited. We love to read. We also love Christmas stories. My children have a favorite that I read to them every year.

We were able to review If He Had Not Come, a story re-introduced by David Nicholson. This classic story is best suited for children ages 6 and up. It is available on the website for $18.95.

If He Had Not Come is a beautiful, colorful, hardcover 8.5 x 11 book. There are 40 pages in the book. It has beautiful illustrations on each page and is a classic story that each child should read or have read to them.

David Nicholson is a retired teacher and a short term missionary. Having been introduced to this story when he was younger, he took it upon himself to have it re-introduced for other generations to enjoy. You can read more about why he chose to re-introduce the book on the FAQ page of the website.

Nan Weeks, the original author, was a teacher and writer. The story, If He Had Not Come, was first included in an anthology that was published in 1938.

Summary of If He Had Not Come:

Bobby was excited to get to bed on Christmas Eve, but before heading up to bed, Bobby's dad sits down with him to read from the Bible. There were five words from the Bible reading that stood out to him. They were "If I had not come." Suddenly, it is morning and Bobby rushes to get dressed so he can start unwrapping his gifts. But, when he got down the stairs, there was no tree or stockings or presents. It was just an empty living room.

Bobby was frantic. He put on his coat, hat, and boots and started running around town. He had to find out what happened. Everyone he ran into just thought it was another day. They didn't know what Christmas was. Bobby had an idea to go to his church to find out what was going on, but all he saw was an empty lot. He noticed a sign though. It read, "If I had not come."

Bobby ran into an elderly gentlemen that needed help. He told the man to stay where he was and he was going to get him some help. But all Bobby saw around him were signs that read "If I had not come." He ran home only to find that the Bible his father read from last night only went to Malachi. There was no New Testament.

The next thing Bobby hears are church bells ringing. They were playing his favorite Christmas carol. He prayed right there in his room to thank God for sending His son to earth.

When this book came, we all sat down and read the book right away. My youngest daughter is 3, listened to the story, but probably did not comprehend the whole story. My older kids enjoyed this story and we discussed how the world would be different if Jesus had not come.

I enjoyed this book very much and I know my kids enjoyed it also. They have re-read it on their own several times. This book gets 5 out of 5 stars from us!

Raegan and RJ in Space: Colonizing the Galaxy for Christ is a full color 48 page graphic novel which tells the story of the first Christians to start their own space program, travel to the Alpha Centauri star system, and establish a colony.

What we thought:
My kids, ages 12, 11, and 9, love to read. They also love to read graphic novels. When I saw these were available to review, I knew my kids would love them. I also was interested in finding out more about these books. The illustrations are very colorful. The books themselves are clean and I didn't have to worry about the content before letting my children read them. I also like that the stories show how helpful the main characters are to others. My boys, 12 and 11, liked that there was diagrams of the ship in the books and listed the characters. I liked that the story teaches good Christian values.

Overall, these are good books and we give them 4 out of 5 stars.

You can find out more and purchase the books on the website.
