For the past several weeks, I have been reading a great new book for parents, Parenting Unchained: Overcoming the Ten Deceptions That Shackle Christian Parents by Dr. James D. Dempsey. This book is available at the website for $14.95 for a nice soft cover 190 page book. If you prefer a Kindle version, it is available for $ .99 this week only (December 8-12, 2014).
About the book:
In Parenting Unchained – Overcoming the Ten Deceptions that Shackle Christian Parents, Dr. James D. Dempsey reveals the ten most destructive lies about parenting. He writes from the heart about the way these lies infected his own parenting, and illuminates the Bible's powerful truths that counter each lie. Both Biblical and practical, each section ends with home activities to help parents take immediate steps to develop their kids' character--character that lasts when they leave home.
The last chapters focus on the most important adjustments parents must make with teenagers to prepare them for independence. Weaving humor into strong warnings, Parenting Unchained points out the hazards that derail the parenting journey.
Dr. Dempsey discusses ten deceptions in the book that parents believe. Those ten deceptions are as follows:
- It's All About Your Kids; Your Character Doesn't Matter
- You're Capable; You Can Do This
- God Only Cares About Rules
- You Can Be A Parent Without Investing Much Time
- Teaching The Right Information Is Enough
- Why And How You Discipline Don't Matter - Just Make Them Obey
- You Don't Need To Talk About Your Faith
- Children Should Choose Their Life Course (You Don't Need To Help Them)
- It's All About Consistency (You Don't Need To Adapt)
- Life Should Be Easy
Satan is out to destroy families. we need to remain focused on God and pray for His help while we parent our children. In the book, Dr. Dempsey says, "God's model for parenting will help you avoid the deceptions that seek to destroy both you and your children." Keeping God first in your life and praying for His help will keep Satan away. But Satan will try his hardest to get to your children, so we need to be vigilant.
Some of my favorite quotes from the book are as follows:
"But parenting is about your character, because it forms the foundation for all you do as a parent. " page 15- This comes from the very first page. It really spoke to me because my character as a parent really does form the foundation of my parenting.
"To be like Jesus, parents must be fully engaged in the task of parenting. They must think about and empathize with their children." page 55- This come from deception four which says, you can be a parent without investing much time. False. To be a parent, you need to spend time with your children.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. This book has helped me already and I know will be a great help in the weeks, months, and years to come.
