Random Five

Random five for this week:

1. We put buying a car this year with our tax refund because we thought we could make our minivan last one more year. About a month ago, it started giving trouble and we have fixed almost everything and it still won't run. I'm so sad we will have to be a one car family for nine months.

2. I can't believe how fast this year is going. Almost June!

3. I'm thinking about getting a part time job, but have been out of work for 13 years. Trying to come up with a resume is hard.

4. Praying the rain stays away on Monday, so we can enjoy the beach.

5. I'm still doing good with my no sugar lifestyle change and have lost 21 lbs so far.

Random Five On Friday

1. On April 4, I started a sugar fast with a Facebook group. It was to be for 40 days, but I have extended it to 60. I have learned so much and feel so much better. I use honey as a sweetener when I need to. And I have lost 17 lbs. I am not going back to my old ways when the fast is up, but I will watch what I eat and not go back to sugary foods for comfort.

2. It has been cool for NC for May. I am not complaining, but I would like to see more sun and some warmer temperatures.

3. I have some great reviews coming up in the next few weeks. Stay tuned.

4. Our neighbors cat had kittens in our garage (no door on the garage) and the kids are having fun with them.

5. We have decided to start out new school year on July 5th. My kids like starting when it is super hot and getting done in mid April when it is still cooler, so they can play outside.

A Look Ahead

I have been in planning mode for our school year for 2016 -2017. I have plotted out our school days on a calendar. Yellow highlighted days are school days and red boxed days are holidays or birthdays. We don't have to track days in NC as the law states: "Operate the school on a regular schedule for at least nine calendar months, excluding reasonable holidays and vacations." The yellow highlighted days include book work and field trips. We also go on field trips on birthdays and holidays. The last two weeks in July are missions trips and camping trips for my older three. They wanted to start school before going on their trips.

Next, I have been writing out the daily lesson plans for my older three. For my boys, I use spiral notebooks to write out their lesson plans. They check off each subject as they finish it each day. I use My Student Logbook for my older daughter. She has enjoyed this planner since we reviewed it two years ago.

I have also started organizing all of their paperwork to do each day. They will only have to pull it out of the file each day to work on their lessons.

This is all just a start to help us get off to a great school year. It helps to be organized.

Wordless Wednesday

On Saturday we went to a Blue Angels air show.

Kwik Stix ~ Review

My children, especially my girls, love to paint and draw. They are constantly asking if they can get the paints out and paint something. I always hesitate, because that means that a mess is likely to be made. Water everywhere, waiting for the papers to dry, and messy paints. I was thrilled when I found out about the Kwik Stix 12 pk from The Pencil Grip, Inc.

What are Kwik Stix?
Kwik Stix is a solid tempura paint that is packaged in sticks (like a glue stick) to take the mess out of painting. Kwik Stix are also fast drying. You no longer have to wait hours for your creation to dry. Kwi Stix dry in 90 seconds. They also work on paper, wood, or cardboard. And best of all, it's a fast and easy cleanup when the kids are finished painting.

Who are Kwik Stix for?
Anybody of any age will enjoy painting with these sticks. My children are 14, 12, 10, and 5. They all equally enjoyed making pictures with these paints. Even I got in on the action and painted some pictures. These are fun at any age!

How we used Kwik Stix: We used them almost daily, especially my girls. I never had to tell them not to paint, because Kwik Stix are easy to get out and easy to clean up. You can see some of our creations in the picture below. One of the times, my 5 year old daughter ended up getting some of the paint from the Kwik Stix on her hands, but it washed right off with some soap and water. I can't tell you how long they last, but we have been using them almost daily and they are still quite full.

What we think of Kwik Stix: We all love them! I love that it is easy to clean up after using. My girls love that they can still paint whenever they want to. We give these paints 5 stars! We can't wait to try the neon and metalix colors.

The Pencil Grip, Inc. also included a sample of their pencil grips for us to try out. We have actually tried them before and my kids like them. They are soft and help them to hold their pencils the correct way.
