Louis Zamperini ~ YWAM Book Review

We love reviewing books from YWAM Publishing. My kids love how interesting these books are written. Over the last several weeks, my kids and I have been reading and learning about Heroes of History -Louis Zamperini from their Heroes of History series.

About the book:
Louis Zamperini is the story of how Louis (Louie) became a great athlete and war hero. Louie was not always a great person. In fact, he was a troublemaker when he was younger. His brother, Pete, saw how fast Louie could run away from authority when he was in trouble, so Pete decides to train Louie to be a runner. Louie became a great runner and could run short distances at record speed. Louie was able to try out for the 1936 Olympics for the 5,000 meter race, something he didn't run very often. He did great and set a record speed for the final lap. After the Pearl Harbor attack, Louie decided to join the military. He became a bombardier. While out on a rescue mission, the engines failed on the plane and sent him and his buddies into the ocean. He was adrift for 43 days before being rescued. He was also sent to prisoner camps after being rescued. He was there for several years before he is able to come back to America. Louie gives his life to the Lord and marries and has two children. Louie lived to be 97 years old.

About the authors:
Janet and Geoff Benge are a married couple who have twenty years of writing experience. Janet taught elementary age children, while Geoff has a degree in history. They have several books in the Heroes for History series and also the Christian Heroes: Then and Now series.

About the Digital Unit Study:
The digital unit study is a downloadable pdf that is split into two sections. The first section is full of chapter questions, ideas for a display corner, student explorations, related themes to explore, and a social studies section. The student explorations section of the study includes ideas for creative writing, essay questions and research topics, hands on projects, visual projects, and arts and crafts. The social studies section is divided into categories to be used for mapping and timeline. There are also appendices that include the answers to the chapter questions and books and resources for further studies. Part two of the unit study has reproducibles that include a biography (fact sheet), map, and timeline.

How we used the book and unit study:
I used this as a read aloud with my older three children (11,13, and 15 years old). Each day, I would read a chapter and after we would go over the discussion questions in the study. There are six questions related to each chapter. I would ask the questions and my children wrote out their answers on a sheet of paper. We looked over all of the other projects and one of them was to create a word cloud. We had fun coming up with words that described Louie. You can see it in the picture below.

We mapped out the various cities listed in the book on the map provided. And I had my daughter work on the timeline that is provided in the unit study. We also watched the movie Unbroken which is based on Louie's life.

What we thought:
We had a good time reading this book and learning more about Louis Zamperini. My boys liked working on the word cloud and my daughter liked learning more about how Louie was rescued. There are some facts in the book that I did not even know. I enjoyed working through the book and study with my children. They have already asked who we are going to be learning about next.

Thin Stix from The Pencil Grip ~ Review

Imagine…letting your kids paint without a mess being made. You may be thinking, “that is not even possible.” I can assure you that it is possible. My girls love to get out the paints and fill up some cups with water and start creating something. It always seems to happen around dinner time and now there is a mess on the table. Now that we have Thin Stix 6 pk of Classic Colors from The Pencil Grip, Inc. the above scenario doesn’t happen anymore. They get out the sticks and start painting with them. Their works of art are dry within minutes and we don’t have a messy table anymore.

  Thin Stix Review

What are Thin Stix?
Thin Stix is a solid tempura paint that is packaged in sticks (like a glue stick) to take the mess out of painting. Thin Stix is also fast drying. You no longer have to wait hours for your creation to dry. Thin Stix dry in 90 seconds. They also work on paper, wood, or cardboard. And best of all, it's a fast and easy cleanup when the kids are finished painting. These paint sticks are thinner (hence the name) than the original Kwik Stix so you are able to have better control and paint with finer detail. Thin Stix paint also comes off of your hands easily. I’ve been able to just rub it right off and of course, it comes right off with soap and water.

thin stix paint

Who are Thin Stix for?
Anybody of any age will enjoy painting with these sticks. My children are 15, 13, 11, and 6. They all equally enjoyed making pictures with these paints. Even I got in on the action and painted some pictures. These are fun at any age!

How we used Thin Stix: We used them almost daily, especially my girls. I never had to tell them not to paint, because Thin Stix is easy to get out and easy to clean up. I even printed some coloring pages to try out the thin stix and it worked out good. You can see some of our creations in the picture above. I can't tell you how long they last, but we have been using them almost daily and they are still quite full. My kids even use these in their bedrooms! I am not worried about messes anymore. We used the regular kwik stix in the past but only used them on paper. This time we bought some wood cutouts (below) to try the thin stix paints on. It worked perfectly and we were happy with the results. We also were able to print out some coloring sheets to use with the thin stix. We were able to get better detail using the thin stix.

  Thin Stix Wood

What we think of Thin Stix: We all love them! I love that it is easy to clean up after using. My girls love that they can still paint whenever they want to. We love that we can take them wherever we want and don’t have to worry about messes. We give these paints 5 stars!

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (R)

Blogging through the Alphabet Men and Women of the Bible

Rebekah: “Captivating”

Rebekah was the wife of Isaac and the mother of Esau and Jacob. When Isaac was old and Esua and Jacob were older, she told Jacob to deceive his father. Rebekah overheard Isaac telling Esau to go hunt and bring him back some stew and he would bless him. Rebekah told this to Jacob and had him go into his father instead so that he would be blessed. Even though Rebekah deceived her husband, she was a beautiful woman of God. She loved God and wanted the best for her sons.

Genesis 24:60-61 ~ And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them. And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.

Genesis 25:28 ~ And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Genesis 27: 6-8 ~ And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the Lord before my death. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.

Rehoboam: “he enlarges the people”

Rehoboam was King Solomon’s son. He was the successor to the throne. He was 41 years old when he became king and he reigned 17 years. When he took the throne, the people were upset about all of the taxes. He consulted for three days and decided the taxes would stay. This caused a division among the kingdom and he tried to fix it, but couldn’t. The tribe of Judah remained faithful to him and they formed the southern kingdom with Benjamin. The northern tribe chose Jeroboam as their king. Rehoboam tried his best to win back all of the tribes, but it was not fulfilled. The northern tribe eventually made war against him and he died when he was 58 years old.

I Kings 11:43 ~ And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.

I Kings 14:21 ~ And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord did choose out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother's name was Naamah an Ammonitess.

Homeschool Rescue ~ Review

Homeschool Rescue Review

Are you getting burned out from your homeschooling journey? Do you need to focus more on other things besides homeschooling (like your house)? Looking for ways to refresh yourself and your household? Are you needing to recharge your batteries? Or are you just looking for some new ideas to incorporate into your daily schedule? Well, look no further. Homeschool Rescue from Only Passionate Curiosity is just the solution.

So, you may be wondering what is Homeschool Rescue and what does it include? Homeschool Rescue is a course that you can take and work through at your own pace. The homepage has an introductory video and shows what each module is about. There is a 60 day schedule that is included that you can follow or you can go at your own pace and take longer (or shorter) on some areas. There are five modules that have lessons. Each module has a different amount of lessons (3-5). Each lesson is fairly short (around 20 minutes) and you are then give a homework assignment. The assignments are not usually hard and they are to help you make progress through the course. Some of the lessons that are available are look to the future, special circumstances (special needs), take back your time, saving time, organization, curriculum, supplies, reward system, training children, teaching teens, and several more.

Course Content Homeschool Rescue Updated_zpsj4uuuqgb

It is easy to get around the website. When you log in, you are able to click on the module you need right at the top. Then from there you just click the lesson you want to watch.

When you log in and go to the lesson page, you will see a screen like the one above. You are able to download the audio for the lesson, download the transcript for the lesson, watch the video, and download the homework and resources needed for the lesson. There is also a bonus section with different styles of planners and a link to the Facebook group that is private and just for Homeschool Rescue members. Some days you are to watch the video and do a sheet or two for homework. The next day may either be another video or another sheet of homework.

How did I use Homeschool Rescue? I printed off the schedule, but life happens and I did get off track from the schedule, but I still used it as a checklist so I knew where to start and what to do each day. It was easy to keep track of what to do each day and watching the videos for each lesson did not take up too much time. Many of the resources and worksheets were so helpful even to me as a homeschool mom of almost 12 years. There were new things that I could implement into our daily schedule. I do have a 6 year old and plan to school her through graduation so I have another 12 years before I am finished, so I can use a lot of the suggestions to not get burned out. I like the idea of using the Brain Breaks (below), especially for my 6 year old daughter.

There were several things I liked about this course. I seem to process things better when I am able to read them when I am listening, so the transcripts came in handy. I loved having several of the resources available, because it gave me some new ideas and showed me some new websites. I loved that it came with a plan to follow. It kept me on track and if I forgot which lesson I left off at, I could just look at the plan to see where I needed to go next.  Also, the biggest struggle for me is finding “me time.” This course has helped me with scheduling and seeing where I could fit myself into each day.  I have been enjoying having some “me time” and am feeling refreshed and ready to tackle our next school year.

Homeschool Rescue is a great program that I highly recommend to new and veteran homeschool moms.

How can you purchase this course? It’s easy. Click here and read through the descriptions. Decide which option is best for your needs at this time.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (Q)

Blogging through the Alphabet Men and Women of the Bible

We are up to the letter Q for our blogging through the alphabet series. There are some queens mentioned in the Bible and since I already wrote about Esther (Hadassah), I decided to write about Queen Jezebel this week for the letter Q.

Queen Jezebel: “the whore of Baal”

Jezebel was the wife of King Ahab. She was wicked. She encouraged her husband to abandon God and start worshipping Baal instead. Jezebel hated the prophet Elijah. She sent him death threats when her husband returned home after a meeting with Elijah where they both prayed to their God/god to see which one could hear their prayer. When Ahab didn’t get his way, he would let Jezebel know and she would take care of things in a wicked way. When Jehu comes after her, she doesn’t run away. Instead, she dances at her window. Jehu commands they throw her out of the window and they do and she is killed.

I Kings 16:31 ~ And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

I Kings 19:1 ~ And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

2 Kings 9:33 ~ And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot.

Quartus: “fourth”

Not much to write about Quartus, only that he was a Corinthian Christian who sent salutations to friends in Rome by way of Paul.

Romans 16:23 ~ Gaius mine host, and of the whole church, saluteth you. Erastus the chamberlain of the city saluteth you, and Quartus a brother.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (P)

Blogging through the Alphabet Men and Women of the Bible

Priscilla: “Ancient”

Priscilla is a women that lived during Paul’s time. She is never mentioned in the Bible without her husband. They must have had a strong marriage and were together all of the time since they are always mentioned together. They also loved the Lord and wanted others to know about Him.

Acts 18:2 ~ And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.

Romans 16:3-4 ~ Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.

Philip: “Lover of horses”

Philip was one of the twelve disciples. He lived in the city of Bethsaida and readily accepted Jesus’ call to be one of the disciples. He was excited and ran off to tell his friend Nathaneal. We can also assume he was smart since he calculated the cost of feeding the 5,000. After Jesus ascended into Heaven, it is believed that Philip went to Phrygia as a missionary and was martyred in Hierapolis.

John 1:43-45 ~  The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.  Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

John 6:7 ~ Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

President Donald J. Trump ~ Copywork Freebie

A couple of years ago, I worked on a president copywork freebie. I was asked if I was going to add Donald Trump and I had forgotten about it. I switched computers and realized all of my stuff was on the old computer. I thought I had saved it to One Drive but did not. So, I dug out my old computer and made a page for Donald Trump. Enjoy.
