J is for Journey

J is for Journey

Here is a little story of how I imagine Mary felt when she had to travel right before she was to deliver Jesus.

Mary was working in the house and she was nine months pregnant. She was about to deliver her baby any day now. She was excited, but she was also nervous. As she was cleaning, her mind kept wandering to the “what ifs?” What if I am not a good mother? What if I am at the market or someplace and I lose track of my child? What if I just can’t do it?

While she was pondering on these things, Joseph came running into the house.

“Mary, we are going on a journey.”

“Now? I am about to have the baby. I can’t go on a journey.”

“We must. It is a decree.”

“But Joseph…”

“Mary, make a list and be sure to pack all of the essentials. Ask your mother what will be needed for the birth and carry that with you. But remember, we don’t have much room to carry a lot, so it will just have to be a small suitcase.”

“Joseph, I don’t know if I can do that. I will talk to my mother and I will try to only pack the essentials.’

Several hours later after talking with her family and packing very light, Mary and Joseph were on their way. Her mother told her not to fret that first-born babies were usually late and she would probably have time to make it back home for the birth.

“Mary, do you need to rest? We’ve been walking for several hours.”

“Yes, I need to rest for just a little time Joseph. I want to make sure we make it to Bethlehem in time for the census so I won’t rest long.”

“We are almost there. You will have good nights rest in just a couple of more hours.”

Mary to herself: “I cannot believe that I am about to deliver and I have traveled for several days all the way to Bethlehem. I miss my family and cannot wait to see them next week. I hope I can make it home for the birth.”

Mary and Joseph made it to Bethlehem, but there was one problem. Mary could not believe what Joseph was telling her. She couldn’t believe that after their almost week-long journey that there was no place where she could rest. And what were those pains she was feeling? Should she tell Joseph that this journey may have hurt her?

“Joseph, I am in pain.”

“What? Where? What is happening?”

“I don’t know, but the pain is getting stronger. I need to lay down someplace.”

“Okay, there is one more place I can check.”

“Mary, he said they were out of rooms, but when I explained you were very pregnant and in pain, he was kind enough to let us rest in his stable.”

“A stable! With the animals!”

Mary, please it is all I can find.”

“Okay, we need to hurry and get in there. I think the baby is coming NOW!”

After several hours had passed Joseph delivered a healthy, beautiful baby boy.  Mary was so proud of him. He was able to complete the task without questions. A few hours later some shepherds showed up at the stable and told Joseph and Mary that they had heard about their journey from the angels.

They said they had told anyone and everyone the good news on their journey to the stable to see the newborn King.

While the stable was a commotion of shepherds and people who had heard the news, Mary kept quiet and knew she was going to be the best mother she could be to this little baby boy.

C is for Christmas

C is for Christmas

Yes, I know Christmas is still 2 months away, but I love the season. We have several Christmas movies that we seem to only watch around November and December. Once in a while, we will pull out Home Alone in the summer or watch The Santa Clause in July. Yes, we have several Christmas movies and I love to watch them several times over the holidays.

My favorite one is The Polar Express. I can watch this several times and still love it. Some others we own are all of the Home Alone, all of The Santa Clause, It’s a Wonderful Life, Disney’s A Christmas Carol, and the people version of The Grinch. We did have the cartoon How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but it got broken and we haven’t replaced it yet. My favorite movie about Jesus’ birth is The Nativity Story. My kids like to watch the Home Alone movies and the Veggie Tales Christmas movies.

I also love when radio stations start playing Christmas music. I listen to a local station that plays only Christmas music of any genre from the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas and KLove during the Christmas season. My favorite Christmas carol is O Come All Ye Faithful. I don’t really have a favorite Christmas song, but love to listen to them all.

Christmas books…I don’t really have a favorite, but obviously love books that tell about the birth of Jesus. One that I reviewed (If He Had Not Come) a few years ago is still read each Christmas.

So, I look forward to a new month beginning and starting to pull out the Christmas movie, books, and music.

Christmas Love Letters From God ~ Book Review and Giveaway

*This post may contain affiliate links*

Christmas Love Letters from God is a beautifully written book by Glenys Nellist and is illustrated by Rachel Clowes.

About the book:
This book is appropriate for children ages four to eight, but I think any age would love this book. The book has seven stories, written in prose and poetry, from Isaiah's prophecy to the wise men's visit. Each story has a letter written to the child from God (the giver can add the child's name to each letter in the space provided). The letters are written in a way that makes it as if God was speaking to the child. God's Perfect Promise (a special Bible verse) accompanies each story and letter.

I cannot wait to give this beautiful book to my 5 year old daughter for Christmas. She loves books and this will be a perfect book to add to her collection. She also loves God and talks about Him all the time. I have read through the book and I know she will love the stories in this book. The illustrations are a perfect match and are very beautiful. This would make a great present for that special little someone in your life.

Christmas Lights

If you live in Eastern North Carolina, you need to try to drive over to Benson to see a beautiful Christmas light display. Meadow Lights was started 40 years ago by a homeowner who wanted to make Christmas special for his family and friends. Over the years, he has added more and now it is a beautiful light display for all to enjoy.

They offer train rides for a small fee. There is also a carousel ride (also a small fee). Your children are able to visit with Santa and get a picture (for a fee). They also have a concession stand. And don't forget to visit the candy store before you leave.

The pictures are from our ride on the train. There are so many fun lights on the property. The kids had a great time. We visited the candy store after the train ride and bought some candy.

Here is a short video I took on the train ride:

History Behind The Song

History Hymn Adeste Fideles

My favorite Christmas carol has always been the song "O Come All Ye Faithful." Just recently, I decided to look up the history of the song. I just never thought to do it before. Looking up the history of a hymn can be interesting.

Some things I found about this song is that it was originally written in Latin. It is believed to have been written by John Francis Wade.  His name is written on the earliest copies of the song.

The earliest it has been found to have been written is sometime in the 1740's. Upon hearing the hymn, the Duke of Leeds, commissioned a fuller arrangement to be written. It became popular in France and Germany in the eighteenth century.

The English version that is well known now was translated by a Catholic priest, Frederick Oakeley in 1841.

There really is not much known about this hymn or the author, but what I did find was interesting to read.

I found this video to be interesting as well:
