Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (Z)

Well, we made it to the letter z for this blogging through the alphabet round. I have had fun learning about the men and women in the Bible. If you haven't read any of the posts, you can read all of them at the landing page.

 Zipporah: "a female bird"

We know that Zipporah was Moses' wife. Her father was Reuel (Jethro) and her sons were Gershom and Eliezer. Zipporah met Moses one day at the well. She and her sisters were taking their father's flock to give them water. Some men tried to drive the women away, but Moses defended them and watered their flock. Their father had them invite Moses to dinner. Moses stayed with them a while and Reuel offered his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. They soon had sons and Moses decided to go back to Egypt.

Exodus 2:21-22 ~ And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter. And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.

Zacchaeus: "pure"

Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector in Jericho. He found out Jesus was going to pass through and he wanted to see him. When he got to to the place, there was already a crowd and Zacchaeus was short and not able to see anything. So, he climbed a tree. When Jesus was passing through, he saw Zacchaeus in the tree and told him He would be visiting his house.

Luke 19:2-3 ~ And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

Luke 19:5-6 ~ And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

Getting creative this week with the letter Y.

Young Maid (Slave) of Israel

We find the story of the young maid in II Kings 5. Naaman has leprosy. We see in verse two of chapter five that this young maid (slave) waited on Naaman's wife. She was there against her will, but she still served. She told Naaman about Elisha and that he should go see him.Naaman trusted the young maid and went to see Elisha and was healed of his leprosy.

II Kings 5:1-3 ~ Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the Lord had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper. And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife. And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy.

Young Lad who had a Lunch

We can find the story of the young lad, who had five loaves of bread and two fish for his lunch, in the book of John. Everyone (over 5,000) were hungry. The disciples did not know what they were going to feed the large crowd. Jesus asked them what they were going to do and it was Andrew who found the young lad and told Jesus what he had with him. The young lad gladly gave his lunch and everyone in the crowd was able to eat and there were also plenty of leftovers (12 baskets).

John 6:8-13 ~ One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (V, W, X)

Since there are not many people in the Bible with names beginning with the ending letters of the alphabet, I have decided to do a combined post. Actually, I've been busy and haven't had time to sit down and get a post up for them. So, I am playing catch up.

Vashti: "Beautiful"

Vashti was the queen of Persia and the first wife of Ahasuerus. She was banned when she refused to show up at the king's banquet. Esther was then chosen to replace her as queen.

Esther 1:11-12 ~ To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on. But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

There are no W or X women names in the Bible.

Vajezatha: "purity, worthy of honor"

He was one of Haman's sons. He was slain by the Jews.

Esther 9:9-10 ~ And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha, The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, slew they; but on the spoil laid they not their hand.

Xerxes: meaning of the name is not known.

Interestingly, this name is not mentioned in the KJV, but it is likely that King Ahasuerus was known by Xerxes.

There are no W men names in the Bible.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (U)

We are to the letter U for this week and I had to get a little creative for the women. There are not any women that are mentioned in the Bible who's name begins with U. But there are plenty of unique unnamed women found in the Bible.

Unique Unnamed Women:

The first one that comes to mind is the lady with the alabaster bottle. She heard Jesus was visiting a Pharisee's house and found her way there with an expensive oil. We don't know much about her, but she loved Jesus.

Luke 7:37 ~ And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment

In Exodus, we have the story of the unnamed princess who found Moses in the river.

In I Kings 17, we learn of the unnamed widow who helps feed Elijah.

There are also plenty of mothers, daughters, and sisters who are not named in the Bible who are also unique. All of us are unique to God in our own special way. He made every one of us unique.

Uriah: "The Lord is my light"

Uriah was Bathsheba's first husband. He was a soldier in King David's army. And he was murdered by King David's order. We don't know much more about Uriah, just that he was a great man and he was a Hittite. He was faithful to his job by not wanting to be home with his wife (when David called him home), but to be out in the field with the rest of the soldiers. He didn't want to take time off when the other men were still out there fighting.

II Samuel 11:6 ~ And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

II Samuel 11:11 ~  And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

II Samuel 11:15-17 ~ And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die. And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were. And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (S & T)

Sarah (Sarai): “Princess”

Sarah was Abraham's wife. She was barren and wanted a child very much. Sarah had a lot of patience. Sarah was also a beautiful woman. Sarah and her husband were commanded by God to move to Canaan where they would become be blessed. Several years later some men visited them and told Abraham that his wife Sarah would have a son the next time they saw him. Sarah was almost 90 years old and when she heard this, she laughed to herself. The man overheard her and asked why she laughed. Soon after the men left, Sarah became pregnant and gave birth to a son, Isaac. Sarah lived to be 127 years old.

Genesis 18:10-12 ~ And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?

Genesis 21:2 ~ For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.


Samson: “Of the Sun”

Samson's parents had prayed for a child and God heard their prayers. God gave them some specific rules to follow about their pregnancy and their son. Samson was born a Nazarite and was not to shave or cut his hair. So, Samson grew up and left his house and fell in love with a Philistine woman. Against his parent's wishes, he married the woman. Samson was a strong man. He discovered his strength when he was on the way to ask the Philistine woman to marry him. He killed a lion with one hand. On the way back to be married, he noticed some bees had made some honey in the carcass of the lion, so he reached in and grabbed it. He ate some and gave some to his parents. At his wedding, he told a riddle to the Philistines and they had to guess the answer. Well, they couldn't, so the threatened his new wife. Samson told her the answer and she told the Philistines. Samson became so angry when he found out the truth and went back home. Samson slaughtered many Philistines in his rage. Later on, he meets a woman named Delilah. She nags him about where his strength comes from and he eventually tells her. She had a servant cut his hair while he is sleeping. Samson is then tortured by the Philistines. One day, about 3,000 Philistines come to watch Samson and when he is led into the arena, he tells them to let him lean on the pillars to rest. He then breaks the pillars and kills himself and all the others.

Judges 14:1-2 ~ And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines. And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.

Judges 16:5 ~ And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.

Judges 16:17 ~ That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

Judges 16:28-30 ~ And Samson called unto the Lord, and said, O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes. And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left. And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.

Tabitha: "gazelle"

Tabitha is mentioned in the book of Acts. She was a disciple at Joppa. She was a good woman. She became ill and died. Some people had heard that Peter was there and called him to come into Tabitha. He prayed over her and told her to arise. She opened her eyes and sat up and he presented her alive to everyone.

Acts 9:36-41 ~ Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them. Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.

Titus: "honorable"

Titus traveled with Paul and Barnabas at Antioch. He also went to Ephesus with Paul and Timothy. He traveled with Paul a few times to different places. Not much else is known about Titus.

Titus 1:4 ~ To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (R)

Rebekah: “Captivating”

Rebekah was the wife of Isaac and the mother of Esau and Jacob. When Isaac was old and Esua and Jacob were older, she told Jacob to deceive his father. Rebekah overheard Isaac telling Esau to go hunt and bring him back some stew and he would bless him. Rebekah told this to Jacob and had him go into his father instead so that he would be blessed. Even though Rebekah deceived her husband, she was a beautiful woman of God. She loved God and wanted the best for her sons.

Genesis 24:60-61 ~ And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them. And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.

Genesis 25:28 ~ And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Genesis 27: 6-8 ~ And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the Lord before my death. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.

Rehoboam: “he enlarges the people”

Rehoboam was King Solomon’s son. He was the successor to the throne. He was 41 years old when he became king and he reigned 17 years. When he took the throne, the people were upset about all of the taxes. He consulted for three days and decided the taxes would stay. This caused a division among the kingdom and he tried to fix it, but couldn’t. The tribe of Judah remained faithful to him and they formed the southern kingdom with Benjamin. The northern tribe chose Jeroboam as their king. Rehoboam tried his best to win back all of the tribes, but it was not fulfilled. The northern tribe eventually made war against him and he died when he was 58 years old.

I Kings 11:43 ~ And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.

I Kings 14:21 ~ And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord did choose out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother's name was Naamah an Ammonitess.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (Q)

We are up to the letter Q for our blogging through the alphabet series. There are some queens mentioned in the Bible and since I already wrote about Esther (Hadassah), I decided to write about Queen Jezebel this week for the letter Q.

Queen Jezebel: “the whore of Baal”

Jezebel was the wife of King Ahab. She was wicked. She encouraged her husband to abandon God and start worshipping Baal instead. Jezebel hated the prophet Elijah. She sent him death threats when her husband returned home after a meeting with Elijah where they both prayed to their God/god to see which one could hear their prayer. When Ahab didn’t get his way, he would let Jezebel know and she would take care of things in a wicked way. When Jehu comes after her, she doesn’t run away. Instead, she dances at her window. Jehu commands they throw her out of the window and they do and she is killed.

I Kings 16:31 ~ And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

I Kings 19:1 ~ And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

2 Kings 9:33 ~ And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot.

Quartus: “fourth”

Not much to write about Quartus, only that he was a Corinthian Christian who sent salutations to friends in Rome by way of Paul.

Romans 16:23 ~ Gaius mine host, and of the whole church, saluteth you. Erastus the chamberlain of the city saluteth you, and Quartus a brother.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (L)

Leah: “Weary”

Leah’s story can be found in Genesis. She was the daughter of Laban. Leah became Jacob’s wife even though it was her younger sister that Jacob wanted. The Lord blessed Leah with six sons and also a daughter. Leah had to have felt unloved by her husband when he found out it was her that he married. Leah was not as beautiful as her sister, but her father said it was not customary to have the younger daughter married before the older. The Lord noticed that Leah was unloved and opened Leah’s womb and gave her many children. Even though she had to compete with her younger sister for affection from her husband, Leah knew that she was loved by God. We can learn to have faith in God from Leah. When we are feeling unloved and alone, we can turn to God and He will be there for us.

Genesis 29:16-17 ~ And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.

Genesis 29:25-26 ~ And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me? And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

Genesis 29:31 ~ And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.

Lazarus: “Whom God helps”

We find Lazarus’ story in the New Testament. He was the brother of Mary and Martha. We know that Lazarus (and his sisters) loved Jesus very much. Jesus is out of town and Mary and Martha sent word to him that Lazarus was ill and they needed Jesus to return as soon as possible. Jesus intentionally spent an extra couple of days out of town. When he returns,  Mary and Martha are upset that he took so long to get back. Now their brother Lazarus was dead. Jesus told them that he is the resurrection and the life. Against Martha’s warnings, Jesus heads out to where Lazarus is buried. We see in John 11, that when Jesus had come to Lazarus’ grave, he wept. He mourned for his friend. Jesus commands him to come forth. One thing that is not mentioned in the Bible is what Lazarus experienced in Heaven. He may have told close friends or family, but it is not recorded. If it was me that had been raised from the dead, I would be telling everyone (strangers, family, and friends) what Heaven was like.

John 11:1 ~ Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

John 11:4-6 ~ When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

John 11:14 ~ Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

John 11:23-24 ~ Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

John 11:43-44 ~ And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (K)

Since little is known about them, I’m going to highlight two women in the Bible whose names start with K.

Kezia: “Cassia (sweet scented spice)”

Kezia was the second born daughter of Job after he went through his great suffering.

Keren-happuch: “Horn of the face paint (cosmetic box)”

Keren-happuch is the third born daughter of Job after his sufferings.

These girls along with their older sister (Jemima) are described as the most beautiful girls in the land.

Job 42: 14-15~ And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Keren-happuch. And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.

Korah: “Ice, Hail”

Korah is related to Moses from his father’s side (some say uncle, some say cousin). Korah is remembered for his rebellious acts against Moses. God did send fire from Heaven and consumed him and all who rebelled with him (250 people total).

Numbers 16: 1-2 ~ Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown.

Numbers 16: 19-21 ~ And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the congregation. And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (J)

Jochabed: “Jehovah is her glory”
We find Jochabed’s story in the book of Exodus. Jochabed is the mother of Aaron, Miriam, and Moses. She had Moses during a time when Pharaoh was killing Hebrew baby boys. She had to hide him when he was born and when he got to big, she floated him in the river hoping someone good would find and take care of him. After Pharaoh's daughter found him, Miriam told her she knew of a nursemaid that could nurse the baby until he was weaned. I can’t imagine how Jochabed felt when she delivered Moses and realized he was a boy and may be killed. How did she hide him and keep him quiet for three months? And how could she let him go not knowing if she would ever see him again when she put him in the river? She had great faith and trusted God to take care of her son.
Exodus 2:2 ~ And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
Exodus 2:7 ~ Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?
Exodus 2:10 ~ And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.

Josiah: “Jehovah has healed”
We fins the story of Josiah in II Kings. He became king at only 8 Years old. Josiah was a good king and did right in the sight of the Lord. During his reign, he proceeded to repair the temple and abolish idolatry. Josiah refused to let the king of Egypt pass through his land to go to war with the king of Assyria. He sent his army out to deal with the Egyptians, but decided to go out himself in disguise. It was there that he was fatally wounded by an arrow. He reigned for 31 years.
II Kings 22:1 ~ Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath.
II Kings 23:2 ~ And the king went up into the house of the Lord, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the Lord.
II Kings 23:23-25 ~ But in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, wherein this passover was holden to the Lord in Jerusalem. Moreover the workers with familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the Lord. And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the Lord with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.
II Kings 23:30 ~ And his servants carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo, and brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own sepulchre. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made him king in his father's stead.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (I)

This week we are at the letter I. There are not many (just one, actually) women’s names that begin with the letter I.

Iscah: “spy”

Iscah is only mentioned in one verse in the Bible. She was the daughter of Haran and the sister of Milcah and Lot.

Genesis 11:29 ~ And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

Isaiah: “the salvation of Jehovah”

Isaiah was one of the prophets. He is considered to be one of the greatest prophets. He lived in Jerusalem and God gave him prophecies that were directed to Israel. Isaiah was married and had two sons. We don’t know much about his life, but we do have his writings and prophecies in the Bible. There are several times in the book of Isaiah that the prophecy refers to Jesus Christ. He prophesied about Jesus’ first and second comings. Isaiah also prophesied many warnings to Israel and Judah. Some other prophecies found in the book of Isaiah are Lucifer’s attempt to overthrow God, Sennacherib’s invasion of Judah, and judgments coming against numerous nations. The prophecies we can look forward to in the book of Isaiah are those about the second coming.

My life verse is Isaiah 41:10 ~ Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (H)

There are so many great people in the Bible and there are also many not so great people. It is difficult to choose which person I should write about, but this week I’ve decided to write about Hadassah and Hezekiah.

Hadassah: “myrtle or bride”

We find Hadassah’s story in the book of Esther. Why? Because Esther’s birth name was Hadassah. Hadassah lived with relatives because her parents had died. Mordecai, her adoptive father and her cousin, brought her to the King’s house after the Queen had died. The king’s servants had decided to search for a young virgin for him. When Hadassah was brought before the king, he found her to be the most beautiful and loved her above all the other young virgins. Mordecai stayed at the palace and was sitting outside one night when he heard two guards plan to kill the King. Mordecai immediately told Esther who then told the King of the guard’s plan. Later on, a man named Haman is upset with Mordecai and plans to kill the Jews. Mordecai makes sure Esther knows about this so she can talk to the king. Unfortunately, Esther never told the king that she was Jewish so she has no idea how he will respond to her. Esther fasted before approaching the King and invited him and Haman to a banquet where she tells the king about Haman’s plan. The King is restless and can’t sleep and asks them to read him some record books. Fast forward and Esther finally reveals that she is a Jew and that she needs to be able to save her people. It took a lot of patience for Hadassah/Esther to keep her secret. She needed to tell it at just the right time.

Esther 2:7 ~ And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.

Esther 2:17 ~ And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Esther 5:2 ~ And it was so, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favour in his sight: and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand. So Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.

Esther 7:2-5 ~ And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom. Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request: For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king's damage. Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?

Hezekiah: “whom Jehovah has strengthened”

We find Hezekiah’s story in the book of 2 Kings. He was the son of King Ahaz, who was an evil king. He was 25 years old when he began to reign and reigned for 29 years. Hezekiah was a good king who did what was “right in the eyes of the Lord.” During his reign, he purified the temple and was able to get rid of the idols. Hezekiah knew that Jerusalem would come under attack, so he had started fortifying the walls, building tunnels, and building towers. Hezekiah became very sick, but began to pray. He lived for another 15 years. It’s amazing to me when I read about a good king who had a terrible father but they turned out to be good. I’m sure those good king’s would give God all the glory.

2 Kings 18:1-3 ~ Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah. And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that David his father did.

2 Kings 20:4-6 ~ And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying, Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord. And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (G)

Gomer: “complete, vanishing”

We can find Gomer’s story in Hosea. She was not a pure woman. She was a lady of the night. She was married to Hosea, but loved other men. Hosea had to buy her back from another man. Gomer was loved by  one man, but still had to go out and find “love” with other men. She had no idea how much she was loved by her husband.

Hosea 1:2- ~ The beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And the Lord said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord. So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; which conceived, and bare him a son.

Hosea 3:1-3 ~ Then said the Lord unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine. So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley: And I said unto her, Thou shalt abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee.

Gideon: “hewer”

We find Gideon’s story in Judges. He was the fifth judge of Israel. During his time, the people were doing evil in the sight of the Lord. The Midianites would come and take things from the people of Israel and push them away from the land that the Lord had given them. The Lord sent an angel to Gideon and told him that he needed to save his people from the Midianites. Gideon questioned God and told Him he couldn’t do it, but God told him He would be with him. After some time, Gideon had a large army, but God told him he had too many. God told Gideon to do some tests on the men and eventually, Gideon had only 300 men left in his army. He took his man down to the Midianites camp during the night and told them not to do anything until he gave the sign. He and his men circled the camp and Gideon said “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon.” And all the men in the army started breaking pitchers and blowing trumpets. The Midianites were scared and ran off. Gideon was one of the best judges in Israel.

Judges 7:7-8 ~ And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place. So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

Judges 7:18 ~ When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.

Judges 8:22-23 ~ Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian. And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (F)

Already to the letter F. Well, since there are no women mentioned whose name starts with the letter F in the Bible, I’ve decided to get creative.

Female at the Well: you can find her story in John 4. Jesus was on a journey and was tired from traveling. He decided to take a rest by Jacob’s well. A little while later, a Samaritan female comes the well. Jesus asked her for a drink. Back in those days, Jewish people did not talk to Samaritan’s. So the woman was surprised when Jesus started talking to her. She asked him how was she to get water out of the well when neither had anything to draw the water up with. Jesus answered her with the salvation message. He also knew she was lying, and she told Him that she did know about the Messiah. Jesus then told her that she was talking to Him. She ran back to the city and told many people of Jesus and many Samaritan’s believed.

John 4:7 ~ There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

John 4:11 ~ The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

John 4: 21 ~ Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

John 4:39 ~ And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

Felix: “Happy”

We learn a little about Felix in the book of Acts. Although his name means happy, he was a mean and cruel ruler. He was the Roman governor from 52 AD to about 60 AD in a town called Caesarea, which is 39 miles north of Jerusalem. One of his commanders brought Paul to him to protect Paul from the Jewish leaders. He kept Paul for five days while waiting for the trial to begin. After hearing Paul’s speech at the trial, Felix decided to postpone his decision. He knew that Paul did not do anything wrong. Felix brought Paul to see if Paul would offer him a bribe to be released. Felix wanted to free Paul, but also wanted something in return. So, when Felix retired, he left Paul in prison.

Acts 24:25-27 ~ And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.

But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.

We are already to letter E of our blogging through the alphabet series. I am enjoying studying and writing about these men and women of the Bible. This week we will focus on Elisabeth and Eli.

Elisabeth: “God is my oath”

We learn about Elisabeth in Luke 1. Elisabeth and her husband, Zacharias, were both Godly people. They were “righteous before God, walking in all the commandments of the Lord blameless.” (Luke 1:6) But, Elisabeth was barren and now she was older. Her and Zacharias had prayed for a child for many years. Elisabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. When Elisabeth and Zacharias least suspected, God had worked a miracle. Elisabeth was with child. She was going to have a baby boy. Her child, John, was going to make the way for the Messiah. She was visited by her young cousin Mary and her child “leaped in her womb.” Elisabeth knew then that Mary was carrying the Lord.

Luke 1:13 ~ But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

Luke 1:24-25 ~ And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

Luke 1:41 ~ And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

Luke 1:80 ~ And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

Eli: “ascent”

We learn about Eli in the book of I Samuel. He was a high priest at the tabernacle in Shiloh. He had two sons that also served in the tabernacle, but they did not know the Lord. He was in the tabernacle one evening and saw Hannah. She was praying, but Eli thought she was drunk. She told him that she was petitioning before the Lord and he sent her away. Hannah did conceive and gave birth to Samuel. When the time came for Samuel to be weaned, Hannah brought him back to the temple to Eli. Samuel lived with Eli and was taught and cared for by Eli. Some years later when Eli was old, the Lord called Samuel in the night. Samuel went in to Eli, but Eli told him it was not him that called him, but the Lord. It was then that Eli confirmed Samuel as a prophet to the Lord. Eli son’s died when they went to battle. They thought the Ark of the Covenant would protect them, but God was not with them. When Eli heard this news, he fell out of his chair, broke his neck and died.

I Samuel 1:14 ~ And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

I Samuel 3:8-9 ~ And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child. Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

I Samuel 4:18 ~ And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (D)

Deborah: “a bee”

We learn about Deborah in the book of Judges. She is a prophetess and judge who is married to Lapidoth. She is the only woman judge that is mentioned in the Bible. She helped Barak organize an army. She told him that the Lord will help him defeat Sisera. And after this event, there was peace in the land for 40 years.

Deborah was courageous and wise. When Barak was scared, she helped him overcome his fearfulness.

Judges 4:8-9 ~ And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go. And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the Lord shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

Deborah would not take credit for what was about to happen, she reminded Barak that this was the Lord’s doing.

Judges 4:14 ~ And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the Lord hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the Lord gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.

Deborah loved the Lord and she was a Godly woman.

Judges 5:2 ~ Praise ye the Lord for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.

We see that God can use anybody who is willing to be used. Are you willing to be used by God?

Daniel: “God is my Judge”

We know quite a bit about Daniel. He has a whole book in the Bible dedicated to him. His most famous story takes place in the lion’s den. Daniel was a man of God and refused to do what the king ordered him to do. Instead, Daniel prayed to the one and only God and disobeyed the king. This made the king furious and ordered his men to throw Daniel into the den with the lions. But Daniel was not fearful for his life. He knew God would be in that den with him. King Darius was not able to sleep that night and when it was morning hurried to the den. He was so happy to find that Daniel was still alive.

Daniel was not going to obey man. He knew he was to obey God.

Daniel 6:10 ~ Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

Because Daniel obeyed God rather than man, he prospered.

Daniel 6:28 ~ So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet ( C )

We are already up to the letter C in our blogging through the alphabet series. This week we are going to be looking at Claudia and Caleb.

Claudia: “Lame”

There is not much about Claudia in the Bible. She is mentioned in 2 Timothy 4. What we do know is she was a Christian and she knew Timothy. She was most likely in Rome where Paul was imprisoned. Some historians believe she was married to Pudens (who is also mentioned in 2 Timothy 4) while others believe she was Pilate’s wife. While we don’t know much about her, I have a strong feeling we will meet her in Heaven one day.

2 Timothy 4:21 ~ Do thy diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.

Caleb: “bold; impetuous, a dog”

We learn about Caleb in the book of Numbers and Joshua. Caleb was sent, by Moses and along with eleven others, to be a spy. When he came back, he told Moses all about the giants and honey and fruit. He told the truth while ten of the others lied. Side note- remember the Sunday School song “Twelve men went to spy on Canaan, ten were bad and two were good.”

The two men who were “good” were Joshua and Caleb. Caleb believed that they could take possession of the land.

Numbers 13:30 ~ And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

Numbers 14: 6-9 ~ And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes: And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.

Because of Caleb’s faithfulness, the Lord brought him out of Egypt with Joshua. Also, in his old age, Caleb received an inheritance in the Promised Land.

Joshua 14:13-14 ~ And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance. Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (B)

Welcome to week two of blogging through the alphabet. This week our focus is going to be on these two people from the Bible.

Bathsheba: "daughter of the oath"

She was the wife of Uriah and after he died became the wife of King David. We can find her story in 2 Samuel 11. She was a beautiful woman. Both her father and husband (Uriah) were military under the direct control of the King. She became mother to Solomon.

Characteristics of Bathsheba:

• Even though she committed adultery with David, she was faithful to him after they were married.
• She was wise. She was able to ensure Solomon became king when David died.
• She was Solomon's closest advisor during his reign,
• She brought up Solomon in a godly and loving home.

2 Samuel 11:3 ~  And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

2 Samuel 12:24 ~ And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the Lord loved him.

1 Kings 1:16-17 ~ And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou? And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the Lord thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.

Boaz: "alacrity"

We find Boaz's story in the book of Ruth. He was a wealthy man and had some land in Bethlehem. Ruth began to glean on his land after she moved there with he mother-in-law Naomi.

Some characteristics of Boaz:

• He was a man of God and loved God.
• He was nice to Ruth when others may not have been.
• He took care of Ruth's needs even before they were courting or married.
• He was kind, thoughtful, and considerate.

Ruth 2:3 ~ And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.

Ruth 2:10 ~ Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?

Ruth 4:13 ~ So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son.

Men and Women of the Bible ~ Blogging through the Alphabet (A)

Welcome to the first week of blogging through the alphabet. I have decided to highlight a man and woman from the Bible each week that corresponds to the letter I am writing about. There may be some weeks that only have a man from the Bible highlighted if there are no woman with the letter I am on.

Abigail: "of joy"

She was the wife of Nabal and after he died, King David. You can find her story in 1 Samuel 25:14-42. Abigail is described as a beautiful woman and full of understanding. She was a Godly woman even when she was married to the wicked Nabal.

There are three characteristics of Abigail:

• She was wise 
• She was courageous
• She was faithful

1 Samuel 25:32-33 ~ And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.

1 Samuel 25:40-41 ~ And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife. And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.

Abraham: "father of a multitude"

He was Sarah's husband and the father of Isaac and other sons. You can find his story in Genesis 11-25. He was a great man that was used by God. 

There are some things we can learn from Abraham:

• He was older when God called him to set out on his journey ~ God can and will use us at any age.
• He trusted God ~ If God told us to take our only son and offer him as a sacrifice, would we do it?
• He obeyed God ~ He left his family when God told him and he took his son to offer as a sacrifice with no questions.
• He relied on God to provide what was needed.

Genesis 22:8 ~ And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

Genesis 22:15-18 ~ And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
