What My Tween Girl Likes To Read

Books My Tween Daughter Likes To ReadMy twelve year old daughter loves to read. She has some favorites that she will read more than once just because she loves them so much. I love that she loves to read since I also love to read. She has read some books that I read when I was her age.

IMG_20180827_084253Mandie Books ~ These books are set in the state (north Carolina) we live in. I read these books when I was her age and had a couple of the books that I gave to her to read through. She got hooked, so I decided to buy the collections (there are five books in each collection) for her and to save them for future readers (my 7 year old  and hopefully granddaughters one day).

There are also a few movies that go with these books and my daughter has enjoyed watching them.

My daughter also loves books by Marguerite Henry. She has read severalbeed0ec1454c14bafdde8130c8a3f508 including Misty  of Chincoteague, Stormy, Misty’s Foal, and Brighty of the Grand Canyon.

She has also watched the Misty movie and enjoyed it. She wanted to know if there were more movies for any of these books and I found out there are some, but they are hard to find (especially on DVD). She loves anything that has to do with horses.

Some other books she ahs read and enjoyed are classics. Anne of Green Gables and Little Women are at the top.  She has also read The Secret Garden and several Little House on the Prairie books. We go to our local library sale whenever they have it (usually two times per year) and she picks out several books that she thinks she would like to read. The majority of the books she picks out are animal related. She loves animals and will read anything that has animals in it.

I just wanted to make a list of a few of her favorites in case you are looking for something for your tween daughter to read.

It’s a Jungle in Here ~ Book Review

It's a Jugle in Here _ Book Review*This post contains affiliate links*.
It’s a Jungle in Here by Kristie Wilde is the third book in the Joyful Creation Series collection.

I love when I find a book or an author that I have not read or heard about. I also love when I find new books that have a Christian theme.

Want to take a little trip to the jungle to see all of the great animals God created? It’s a Jungle in Here takes readers through the jungle and shows them many of God’s wonderful creations. We see colorful butterflies, big lions, even bigger elephants, and many little frogs. This cute little book is an easy read. It doesn’t take very long to read through and can be read easily by new readers. There is about one sentence on each two page spread. The illustrations are beautiful and colorful. I read this to my seven year old daughter (because she loves to be read to) and she loved looking at the pictures. She wanted to study each page to see if there were any hidden animals.  I love that this book focuses on the creations that God made and how he made each animal different. The book also mentions that God is happy with how He created us. The last pages of the book tell some facts and include Bible verses.  We look forward to reading the other books in this series.

YWAM Publishing ~ Review

Laura Ingalls Wilder Review

Having reviewed books from the Heroes of History line from YWAM Publishing, I knew we would not be disappointed with any of the choices that were offered to us. For this review, our first choice was Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Storybook Life. My oldest daughter had just finished reading one of Laura’s books and I thought she would love to read more about her growing up years and her family.

YWAM, which stands for Youth With A Mission, publishes different biographies to encourage Christians to make a difference. in the world.

Laura Ingalls Wilder was written by Janet and Geoff Benge. Janet and Geoff are a married couple who have twenty years of writing experience. They desire to make history come alive.

This biography is less than 200 pages and has 15 chapters. It could be read fairly quickly or you could read it slowly over a period of time. This book would make a great read aloud book or you could choose to have your children read through it themselves. The book covers Laura’s life from when she was a small child until her death. It talks about the hardships the family encountered, but it also talks about the fun they had as well.

Quote

These books have an accompanying digital unit study that can be used with them. The unit study is a downloadable pdf that includes study questions, ideas for a display, essay and creative writing, and hands-on projects. There is also a fact sheet that you can fill out that lists the full name, date of birth, parents, siblings, and date of death. A timeline of important events during the person’s life is included, as well as some maps of the area where the person lived or traveled.

In the past, I have used this books as a read aloud for my children. This time I decided to let my 7th grade daughter read the book on her own. She had just finished reading one of Laura’s books and I thought she would like to read about the author’s life.  My daughter read through about a chapter a day. She did know some of the things she read just by reading Laura’s books and also by watching Little House on the Prairie. She enjoyed learning about some things she didn’t know like Laura’s Christmas present of a doll one year.

When my daughter had finished the chapter, I would go over the questions with her. I had her pick one hands-on project to do after she finished IMG_20180426_133748reading the book. She picked to make a rag doll like Laura’s. We found some instructions online and made a no sew one easily and quickly with some scrap fabric I had laying around. I was hoping she would want to bake or make something to eat, but she said she wanted the doll because Laura’s doll was named Charlotte and that is my daughter’s name.

She enjoyed reading the book, going through the questions, and making her new doll. I also had her fill out the fact sheet and had her look at the states where Laura lived and traveled through. We also went over some of the events on the timeline.

My daughter enjoyed the book and said she would love to read another biography soon. I had her look through some of them and she mentioned Amy Carmichael might be one she would enjoy.

Y is for YWAM Biographies

Y is for YWAM Biographies

We were first introduced to YWAM biographies in 2013. It was my first year on the Homeschool Review Crew and I read through Jim Elliot with my children. My boys liked how well the biography was written and also liked the unit study that you can use with the biography. Over the last several years, we have read through several books and learned more about the lives of Milton Hershey and Louis Zamperini.

I’ve used these books as a read aloud in the past, but this year, I was chosen to review Laura Ingalls Wilder. I am having my daughter read the book since she has just finished reading Little House in the Big Woods. I thought it would be interesting for her to learn more about the author of the Little House books. She is enjoying the book. I do ask her the unit study questions orally after she reads each chapter. The review is due at the end of the month and I am planning on making a recipe next week from Laura Ingalls time (there are a few listed in the unit study, but we also have Little House cookbook).

I know there are people on Facebook that are always asking “what good Christian biographies can my kids read?” The answer is YWAM biographies! They are great and give a lot of information in their books.

Until I Knew Myself ~ Book Review

Until I Knew Myself Book Review*This post contains affiliate links*

Tammy L. Gray is a new to me author that I was introduced to by another author I follow on Facebook. I haven’t been reading much lately over the past several years because I haven’t really had much time. This year, I wanted to get back into the habit of finding good Christian authors who have good Christian books available.

Until I Knew Myself is a story about friends. It’s a story about finding out who your family really is. Tyler was an orphan taken in by his best friend’s family. Ten years have passed, but he still longs to know about his biological family. Can a call following his grandfather‘s death tear him apart from his adopted family? Will Tyler trust his friends or his biological family? What will happen to Tyler’s relationships with his girlfriend and best friend? Will he see that they are his true family?

What I thought ~ I would consider this book a contemporary Christian28056109_10211353768295994_2321130705852523272_n fiction book. It takes place in modern-day Texas. It did take me a couple of chapters to get into the book. But once I started reading, I was hooked. There were some parts of the book that I was not expecting. Tammy Gray managed to keep me guessing what would happen next. Just when I thought I had it figured out, the story took a totally different turn. There were some parts of the story that I wished had gone a different way, but in the end, the story came together and it had a great ending. I'm glad to have been introduced to this author and will read more of her books, especially in this new series so I can find out what happens next.

*I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.*

A Light On The Hill ~ Book Review

A Light On The Hill

I love finding new to me authors and being able to read a good Christian fiction book. Recently I found an author I haven’t read before and she was looking for influencers for a new book in a new series she was launching (which is today February 6). One word ~ Wow! I am so glad to have found Connilyn Cossette and read her latest novel, A Light On The Hill.

I love reading Christian fiction and have read from several authors over the years, but have never found an author that could hook me from the first page, but Connilyn has managed to do just that.

About the book: Moriyah, who had been taken captive in Jericho seven years ago and was branded with the mark of the Canaanites gods, is trying to find peace with God in her life.  The mark causes her to hide behind veils, Moriyah hides and doesn’t socialize. Because of this, she has not had any thoughts about marriage…until now. Her father has found someone who is willing to marry her.  She will cook and be a mother to the motherless sons of this man. But when things go horribly wrong, Moriyah is forced to leave her home and head to a city of refuge.  It is not an easy journey fleeing to the city of refuge. She encounters many dangers along the way.

A Light On The Hill Quote

My thoughts: This was the first book I have read that is written by Connilyn Cossette and it is not my last (I've already ordered the 1st book in her 1st series). This book is a Biblical fiction and you can tell from reading the book that much research was done. Connilyn has actually visited the Biblical cities that she is writing about.  Although there may be some parts that are not true to what would have happened during that time (I don't want to give anything away), I realized that this is a fictional story and the details are added to help tell the story.

If Moriyah was a real person, I would have wanted her for a friend. She is a great woman of character and finds out how to trust in God again after being through so much. I really loved everything about this book, the people, the places, and just everything. This is a great book if you are looking for a clean romance Biblical Christian fiction book.

I cannot wait for the second book in this new series to be released. Connilyn has me hooked!

*I received an advanced copy from the publisher. This is my honest review.*

B is for Books

B is for Books

Well, I love books! And since I homeschool, that means I have a lot of books that I have collected over the years from different places.

I have everything from children’s book to chapter books to high school classics. I also have paper books, hard back books, and books on a Kindle.

Some of my favorite children’s books are ones that I read when I was a Little Critterchild. I’ve introduced my children to the Little Critter books, which is one of my favorites from when I was a child. Some other favorite children’s books are Berenstain Bears, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and any of the Dr. Seuss books.

Some chapter books that my children have read over the last few years are Charlotte’s Web, Anne of Green Gables, Huckleberry Finn, and several others.

One of my favorite authors, who lives 30 minutes from me, is Nicholas HeartlandSparks. I have read almost all of his books and even won a whole set of his books a couple of years ago.  Right now, I am reading through the Heartland series and my 12 year old daughter will probably be reading them after I do. She loves everything about horses. She borrows  e-books about horses and always wants to buy horse books at the library sale.

I’ve also shared some new favorites over the past several weeks and we can’t wait for more of the new books in the series to come out. If you want to find out about some of our other favorites you can click here and read through some posts.

God’s Great Love For You ~ Book Review

God's Great Love For You - Book Review

God’s Great Love For You is a children’s book that was written by bestselling author and pastor, Rick Warren.

This is a beautiful yet simple story that reminds us that God loves us “on good days and bad days.” His love is with us everywhere and it will never end. Although this simple story was written for young children, I think older children adults need to also be reminded of God’s love for them. The illustrations in the book are wonderful and help tell the story beautifully.

Book Sample

Our family has enjoyed reading through this story and remembering that God’s love is always there for us. And though it has few words, the pictures bring the story to life. This is a great book that I think all ages will enjoy, but especially young children.

I am able to give away one copy to my readers in the Continental USA. Please use the rafflecopter form below to enter.

The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls ~ Book Review

We were privileged to have been chosen to review two books from The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls from Worthy Kids/Ideals. We received The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Beginning (Book #1) and The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: Race to the Ark (Book #2).

About the books:
The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls is designed for children ages 6-9 with a reading level in grades 1-3.

The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls series is a time travel series where Peter, his sister Mary, and their dog Hank go back to the stories from the Bible from a special scroll that their great uncle found. In order for them to get back, they must find the clues from the scroll in a seven day period. There are also rules that they have to follow with the most important one being that they cannot tell anyone they are from the future.

In Book 1, Peter, Mary, and Hank are left at their Great Uncle Solomon's house while their parents go to Africa for a month. The kids thought that they were going to be so bored and that it was going to be a long month. Great Uncle Solomon started to tell them of his adventures as he traveled the world collecting Biblical artifacts to prove the Bible was real. But there was one discovery that he had not told anyone about, until now. He told Peter and Mary he had found a legend about the hidden scrolls and that he had actually found the scrolls. He also told them he had no idea what they contained because he couldn't open them. He said he had read that only chosen ones can open the scrolls. In order to know if they are the chosen one, they would hear a lion's roar. That night Peter and Mary are woken up by their dog barking. They go to the library and find a book with a lion on it that the dog is barking at. They tried to pull it out, but it actually opened a secret room where the scrolls are kept. Suddenly, everything shakes and Peter, Mary, and Hank find themselves in complete darkness. They have no idea where they are. They hear a booming voice say "Let there be light." When the water is created, Peter, Mary, and Hank meet the angel, Michael. He helps them out a little bit. He tells them the rules and that in order to return they have to figure out the words on the scroll. They see the world being created and also meet Satan as a snake who tries to deceive them. What happens to Peter, Mary, and Hank? How did they get back? What happened?

In Book 2, Peter, Mary, and Hank are still at their Great Uncle Solomon's house. They have been back for three days and are wondering if they will get to open another scroll. Suddenly, they hear the lion roar and find themselves back in the Bible. They don't know where they are at first but soon realize they are at the place where Noah is building the ark. This time, they have seven words to solve the scroll. They wonder if they can actually complete it in time since the first scroll only had three words to solve. They meet many rude people, but they also meet Noah's family. They get to tour the ark and see all of the animals as Noah and his family prepare for the flood. Will they be able to solve the scroll in time to make it back before they drown in the flood?

What we thought: I used these books as read alouds for my 1st grade daughter. We have been having a great time reading through these books. My daughter always wants me to read "one more chapter." These books are written well and have some illustrations mixed in with the story. She said her favorite book was the 1st one because she liked hearing how the world was created. These books are easy and fun to read. We are definitely looking forward to more books in this series!

Book Review ~ Imagine…The Great Flood

Book Review Imagine...The Great Flood

We were given the opportunity to review the first book in a new series from Barbour Publishing, Imagine…The Great Flood by Mark Koceich. This is a story about a boy from modern times who goes back in time to the story of Noah and his ark.

In this story, Corey is out with his mom and dog Molly. He and his mother are talking while playing fetch with the dog. It begins to thunder and lightning and Corey is on his way into the woods to get the dog. On the way, Corey falls and bumps his head. The next thing he sees is some men in robes and some animals. He finds out that the man is Shem and he his helping his father get the animals to the ark. While they are out gathering the animals, Corey and Shem are being chased by the Nephilim (giants) and Elizar (an evil man). Corey does get caught by the Nephilim and wonders how he will ever make it out alive and back to his home. He remembers something that his mom told him~ to trust in God. He prays to God to help him out of the situation he is in and gets out of the deep well the Nephilim put him in. It had already started raining and the water was coming up from the ground and he is being pulled away by the current. Just as he is about to be safely on the ark, he was pulled down into the water. When he comes to, he hears a familiar voice.

I read this as a read aloud to my six year old daughter. We read a few chapters a day and she was always disappointed when I stopped. She wanted to know what was going to happen next. After I finished, I asked her some questions about the book.

~ What was this book about? It was about a boy who went back into the Bible during Noah’s Ark time.
~ What was your favorite part?  I liked the part when he went back to his home. I was happy that he was able to get back to his family.
~ Were there any scary parts? Yes, the giants were kind of scary.
~ What did Corey learn? He learned to trust in God.

We both enjoyed the book very much and this was a great book to read aloud to her. The recommended ages for the book is 8-12. There are some scary parts and even though she mentioned them, it was nothing gory. I didn’t really notice any scary parts, just the Nephilim chasing them and them not knowing if they would get back to the ark alive. There were some mild violent parts (the Nephilim throwing objects at Corey and Shem and them throwing Corey into a deep well). The book does mention how Elizar is “one who uses dark arts to perform magic.”

Overall, this was a great book and I recommend it if you are looking for something different to read to your children.

We look forward to the second book in the Imagine series coming out next spring about the ten plagues.  At the time of this writing both books, Imagine…The Great Flood and Imagine…The Ten Plagues, are on sale for $4.49.

Carole P. Roman Book Review

Carole P. Roman Book Review

*This post contains affiliate links*

We have reviewed books from Carole P. Roman in the past, so I was excited to be chosen to review some different books this time. We received Oh Susannah: It’s in the Bag and Can a Princess Be a Firefighter? to read through.

Oh Susannah cover Jpg_zps5vx1cw4kOh Susannah: It’s in the Bag is the first book in a new chapter series. This book is geared toward the lower elementary age. This story is about Susannah Maya Logan who is in the third grade. It starts out with her having trouble with her homework. She feels like she can’t talk to her parents about not understanding the math problems because they are too busy with their own work. She leaves for school the next morning with a feeling of dread. Her problems keep getting bigger as the day goes on and she doesn’t know what to do. She keeps stuffing all of her school work into her backpack until it can’t hold anymore. When she gets home from school, she stuffs the full backpack under her bed hoping it will just disappear and make all of her problems go away.  When she goes to bed that night, she starts thinking about that full back pack and eventually falls asleep. The back pack haunts her in her dreams and becomes so big that it just explodes all over room. Her parents rush in when they hear her scream. They stay with her and make her talk about what is going on. Will they listen? Will things change? How can they help her still be a little girl but remember her responsibilities also?

Oh Susannah: It’s in the bag is a short 34 page, nine chapter book. It is an easy read and I read this to my 6 year old daughter in a couple of days. We both looked forward to finding out how Susannah would deal with her problems. This book gave me an opportunity to talk with my daughter about not hiding her problems from me, but coming to me to talk them over. W can’t wait to read the next book in the series to find out more about Susannah.

Princess Cover updated_zpst31jlv0aCan a Princess Be a Firefighter? is a story about two daughters asking their dad if they can be something when they are older, but still be a princess. The dad tells his daughters that they can be anything they want to be when they grow up and that they will always be a princess to him.

My daughter loved this book. She has mentioned that she would like to be a firefighter when she grows up, so I knew she would enjoy this book.  It is a short, easy to read picture book that can be read in one sitting. It is ideal for preschool age, but really anyone who has daughters would love this book.

Carole also sent us two bonus books to look over and read. We were sent One to Ten: Squirrel’s Bad Day and The Crew Goes Coconuts: A Captain No Beard Story.

One To Ten cover JPEG_zpshojqyd47One to Ten: Squirrel’s Bad Day is about a squirrel who is rushing around trying to gather acorns when she loses them all. She is frustrated, but her friends try to help her by measuring how bad a problem is from one to ten. After hearing about her friend's problems, she realizes that her problem is not so big after all. Her friends plan to help her gather more acorns so she won’t be without.

The Crew Goes Coconuts_zpskgz1fu1kThe Crew Goes Coconuts: A Captain No Beard Story is Volume 6 in the Captain No Beard Series. This series is about the imagination of two cousins who are playing with their stuffed animals. This story begins with the crew being thirsty. They are docked at an island, but there is nothing to drink. They couldn't find any water to drink and their juice on board is all gone. They blame a goat that one of the crew members brings with them and start making fun of the goat.  Captain No Beard hears them and asks what the problem is. They let him know. He comes up with a solution that will make everyone happy.

Abigail: The Belle of Bravery Book Review and Giveaway

You may remember my post from June about Esther: The Belle of Patience. If you have not read, I encourage you to do so.

Erin Weidemann has done it again! The third book in the Bible Belles series is about Abigail: The Belle of Bravery.

About the series:
The Bible Belles is a five book series based on women of the Bible. Erin is using the acronym H.E.A.R.D. for the series. H is a book on Hannah, E is a book on Esther, and A is a book on Abigail, R will be on Ruth, and D will be on Deborah. The series acronym is based on Exodus 28:35 ~ The sound of the bell(e)s will be heard.

Rooney:
When I wrote my last review, I didn't realize that the character in the book was named after Erin's own daughter. (You can read about how the Bible Belles got it's start here) Rooney, with the help of her guardian angel Mari, is able to learn from the women in the Bible and earn that woman's superpower. The different superpowers are prayer, patience, bravery, loyalty, and leadership.

Abigail:
The story starts out with Rooney, her friend Dani, and her brother Sam playing outside. Sam is having a difficult day and is being mean to some new neighbors. What my girls thought:
My girls are eleven and five and they both enjoy these Bible books that are geared just for girls. My older daughter is able to read the books to her younger sister and it gives them a bond. We also love how each story is illustrated perfectly. My youngest daughter loves Supergirl, but I'd rather her have Abigail and other women of the Bible as her superheroes. I also love that there is a devotional that goes along with the Abigail book. And don't forget the coloring pages.

Christmas Love Letters From God ~ Book Review and Giveaway

*This post may contain affiliate links*

Christmas Love Letters from God is a beautifully written book by Glenys Nellist and is illustrated by Rachel Clowes.

About the book:
This book is appropriate for children ages four to eight, but I think any age would love this book. The book has seven stories, written in prose and poetry, from Isaiah's prophecy to the wise men's visit. Each story has a letter written to the child from God (the giver can add the child's name to each letter in the space provided). The letters are written in a way that makes it as if God was speaking to the child. God's Perfect Promise (a special Bible verse) accompanies each story and letter.

I cannot wait to give this beautiful book to my 5 year old daughter for Christmas. She loves books and this will be a perfect book to add to her collection. She also loves God and talks about Him all the time. I have read through the book and I know she will love the stories in this book. The illustrations are a perfect match and are very beautiful. This would make a great present for that special little someone in your life.

The Biggest Story ~ Review and Giveaway

The Biggest Story: The Animated Short Film (DVD)

*This post may contain affiliate links*

I was recently sent The Biggest Story DVD and CD to review. The Biggest Story is a book written by Kevin DeYoung that was published in August of 2015. Recently, the story was brought to life through an animated short film and an audio cd.

About the animated short film:
The DVD is narrated by Kevin DeYoung and is about 30 minutes long. It brings the pictures from the book to life. The story is about God's plan for us from creation until His return. It also features beautifully animated illustrations adapted from the book, The Biggest Story: The Animated Short Film will captivate children and parents alike as they see how all the classic stories in the Bible connect to Scripture’s overarching message about God’s glorious plan to redeem his rebellious people.

About the audio book:
This audio book of The Biggest Story—written and narrated also by the best-selling author Kevin DeYoung—leads kids and parents alike on an exciting journey through the Bible, connecting the dots from the garden of Eden to Christ's death on the cross to the new heaven and new earth.

My kids and I enjoyed listening to and watching this story come to life. We had not heard of this story before the review, but now we are interested in also reading through the book. Both the cd and DVD come with a two-sided colorful poster. We highly recommend the DVD and CD.

Would A Worm Go On A Walk? ~ Book Review and Giveaway

Image 1

My five year old daughter loves to look at books and have books read to her. The latest book that we are reviewing is Would a Worm Go on a Walk? by Hannah C. Hall. This book is a nice hardcover book with wonderful illustrations by Bill Bolton.

About the book:
“Would a worm go on a walk, if you could lead him down the street? / Would he wear his tiny tennies, if he had two worm-sized feet?”
The book is a humorous and imaginative picture book that introduces children to the idea that animals are uniquely created by a loving and wise God. Would a Worm Go on a Walk?, with its colorful, comical illustrations, is a fresh, fun way to teach young children that God created all things very good. He gave all the animals, and children, too, wonderful qualities and unique strengths. Children will giggle over the ridiculous scenarios presented, and they will come away with the knowledge that we all are loved and special.

About the author:
Hannah C. Hall is the author of best-selling children’s books, including God Bless You and Good Night and God Bless Our Christmas, as well as an award-winning blog, HannahCHall.com. Hannah lives in Prairie Grove, AK with her husband, Josh, a worship pastor, and their four children.

What my daughter and I thought:
My daughter loved looking at the pictures as I read her the story. She laughed about the silliness of the animals being portrayed. It was a cute book and I like how it ended with "God's masterpiece is YOU!" This is definitely one of those books that will be read over and over again. We both loved it.
